The supercomputer of the nonja base sat still and unmoving. This was not entirely strange, as being a computer, it was not built to move. The supercomputer silently ran a diagnostic on the torture chambers. It's programming ordered it to. Hours later, Temporarily9 came in. He sent several messages to nonja officers, and because he was running out of time for other things today, he ordered the supercomputer to torture the prisoners. The computer responded in the punctual way computers do with "Sir, I am incapable of torturing subjects". Temporarily9 looked at the computer. The computer did not "know" he was looking, but it's scanners indicated this and logged it in the computer's vast memory banks. Temporarily9 answered to this with "What are you talking about? Of course you can torture prisoners! Your connected to the torture area!". The computer's audiovisual scanners logged this response as well. It responded that it did not know how to torture. Temporarily9 told it that as a supercomputer, it should know how. The supercomputer told him it didn't. This exchange lasted several more mintes before Temporarily9 became exasperated with the whole business. The computer was incapable of being exasperated, because, being a computer it was incapable of emotion. Temporarily9 had very little time before he attended a tactics meeting with the nonja officers, so he programmed a torture schedule into the computer and left promptly.
This programming worked just fine, until the prisoners realized that the various torturing devices were on a schedule now. They memorized this schedule, because they had little else to do. After they memorized this schedule, they began to mentally prepare themselves for the torture they knew was next. A few days later, when Temporarily9 came to watch to the recordings fromt the torture chamber, he noticed a distinctive lack of searing pain, and insanity on the prisoner's faces. He asked the computer what it was doing wrong. The computer said nothing was wrong, and everything in the base was at peak effieciency. Temporarily9 told it that the prisoners were not screaming in pain, and only grimaced slightly when they were tortured. The computer was silent. Temporarily9 asked it what it was doing wrong, and the computer told him very politely and concisely it was doing nothing wrong. Temporarily9 responded just as politely and concisely that he didn't think the computer ws right, and the computer told him that it was right. This continued for several minutes before Temporarily9 became very quiet. He looked at the computer, than at the button on the front that said "Off". The computer's scanners logged this motion, just before it unexplainably blanked out. The explanation for this was that Temporarily9 had pressed the button.
Temporarily9 suddenly doubted the intelligence of this action. Pressing that off button had completely shut down the computer's processor forever, and with it, the base's security and ameninties that were not run by a backup system. The lights went out, the food proccessing station shut down, and the boiling lava in the torture chamber stopped boiling. The only things that continued to run were the prison cells, the outer perimeter security, and several auxillary generators. He began plans for a magnificent new AI generated supercomputer capable of learning and emotion. It's name would be V.I.R.O.S., or "Virtual Intelligent Robotic Operating System".
The nonjas quickly stripped down the old computer, and recycled non-processor related pieces into V.I.R.O.S. The new processor and AI center were quickly built, and programmed by Temporarily9 himself. All the nonjas vowed not to eat until it was finished , so loyal were they. Not surprisingly, this made them work much faster. Within the week, a computer a thousand times more powerful was finished. Above it's screen, emblazoned in gold, was V.I.R.O.S. in cursive print.
Within several minutes, V.I.R.O.S. proved himself to be incredibly superior to the old computer. The whole base was active in 30 seconds. The power was rerouted to be more effiecient in 15 seconds. The food processors were making top ramen out of everything from caviar to chocolate. All that remained to be tested was the torture chamber. It was a hit.
The prisoners were balanced lightly between insanity and sanity. Each torture was personally overseen and conducted by V.I.R.O.S.' all seeing eyes. The sadistic part of V.I.R.O.S.' programming evolved. Soon he was mentally torturing the subjects too. He extracted as much personal information as possible from them, by projecting realistic hologram of a "traitor nonja" and befriending them. Within a week, every prisoner's brain was a soggy puddle of oatmeal. The reign of V.I.R.O.S. had begun.
